By agreeing to remove an addictive rewards feature on it’s app, the European Commission has agreed to close a Digital Services Act (DSA) investigation it had on TikTok. The TikTok feature rewards users with points for doing certain in-app tasks such as liking and watching videos, amongst others. Users can then convert the points to other monetary values, such as Amazon vouchers. The Commission argues the feature is addictive and affects user’s mental health and creates an addictive behavior. “The available brain time of young Europeans is not a currency for social media – and never will be”, the EU’s internal market commissioner said. TikTok further agreed not to bring back the feature under a different name or any feature similar to it.
