The Canadian government has ordered TikTok, the popular social media platform, to shutdown all its offices in the country, citing concerns around national security. The ban does not affect the app itself, just its physical offices in the country. Users in the country can still access the app online, and post or engage with it as they choose. Francoise-Phillipe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry said, “the decision to use a social media application or platform is a personal choice”.
TikTok responded by saying the move will affect hundreds of jobs in the country. TikTok plans to appeal the decision in court. TikTok’s estimated user base in Canada is expected to be around 15 million with most of that being users between 18 to 24.
