What we do
Where did we come from?
Volkert traces its roots back to 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana, where a family-run engineering corporation called Doullut & Ewin was organized. In the fifties, the firm was named Ewin Engineering and moved to Mobile, Alabama. It was there that an enterprising engineer named David G. Volkert acquired the firm and put his own stamp on it — a company dedicated to “serving clients with quality, innovation, and honest value.”
Volkert has had a part in some of the most significant infrastructure projects in the United States throughout the 20th century, from designing the longest continuous bridge over water (an achievement for which the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway still holds the world record) to planning much of the country’s interstate system.

In the 21st century, Volkert has accelerated its growth to become a nationally active, award-winning professional services firm, broadening its focus to encompass both the natural and built environments.
We are committed to providing clients with creative solutions for a sustainable environment, including improvements to infrastructure, the environment, and natural resources. We strive to deliver the three principles of sustainability—environmental, social, and economic—in our work and in our business operations.
