The authors bring to this book their life-long experience and expertise in reservoir engineering and simulation techniques and practice. The goal is to present a comprehensive book, starting from basic principles and leading to real-life reservoir management aided by simulation. This practical book explores the functions of reservoir engineers, and how they analyze, think and work in real life situations.
It is designed to aid students and professionals alike in their active and important roles throughout the reservoir life cycle (discovery, delineation, development, production, and abandonment), and in the various phases of the reservoir management process (setting strategy, developing plan, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and completing). It is a modern and very practical guide offering reservoir engineering fundamentals, advanced reservoir related topics, reservoir simulation fundamentals, and problems and case studies from around the world. It offers all this information with guidelines on how to assist these processes with the use of simulation software (software not included).

About the Authors
Dr. Abdus Satter is president of Satter and Associates, which was formed in Houston upon his retirement from Texaco in 1998. His company is involved in engineering consulting and training services. He has participated in and led reservoir management projects in the U.S., UK, Cameroon, Denmark, Indonesia, Nigeria, Trinidad, and elsewhere. He is a Distinguished Member and a Distinguished Lecturer of the Society of Petroleum Engineers on the topic of Integrated Reservoir Management (1996–1997), and Asset Management through the Reservoir Life Cycle (2002–2003). He teaches SPE and industry courses.
He has 40 years of worldwide, diversified experience and expertise in reservoir engineering, reservoir simulator development and applications, water flood, enhanced recovery techniques, and reservoir studies and operations. He has been published numerous times in these areas.
His previous published books with co-authors are Integrated Petroleum Reservoir Management, Integrated Water Flood Asset Management, and Computer-Assisted Reservoir Management. He holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dhaka, P.E., and M.S. degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Science from the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Ghulam Iqbal holds M.S. and Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, where he was a recipient of Oklahoma Mining and Minerals Research Institute scholarship. He also holds a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of California. He has decades of combined experience in reservoir engineering and simulation, model development of fluid flow systems, data integration, information technology, environmental issues, multi-disciplinary teamwork and oilfield asset management.
Spanning over continents, his career assignments included management of a giant oil field in the middle-east producing over half a million barrels daily. He worked with a highly dedicated team which pioneered the application of multi-lateral horizontal well technology in the region in 1990s. The integrated team provided innovative solutions to combat issues related to early water breakthrough, low productivity, reservoir characterization and field monitoring, among others, with an emphasis on state-of-the-art techniques. He received the best performance award in 2000 for outstanding services in managing assets for the company.
Author of many technical publications, including contribution to publication of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Dr. Iqbal has conducted several hands-on workshops for oil and gas professionals overseas on reservoir engineering, asset management and petroleum basin modeling under the U.S. Agency for International Development program.
Dr. Jim Buchwalter is president of Gemini Solutions Inc. (GSI). He and Dr. Ray Calvert started GSI in 1996 after a 15 year career as a reservoir engineer with Texaco. GSI offers reservoir engineering training and consulting simulation services.
He is a member of SPE and has worldwide experience in reservoir engineering and simulation. He maintained and enhanced Texaco’s in-house simulator before forming GSI. He was also active in developing easier to use simulation interfaces, which resulted in a faster simulation work flow at Texaco, and expansion of the simulation community from a dozen or so experts to hundreds of engineers in the 1990’s.
He has published numerous times on various topics in the reservoir simulation field. He holds B.Sc. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rice University.
