An update of the PennWell classic nontechnical guide to logging techniques, this text provides an easy-to-understand overview of the technically complex subject of well logging. The book is broken into three main parts:

  1. Earth's formations: Details how to determine if there is oil or gas present in those formations
  2. Real-life examples: Shows how to read open-hole logs, make the calculations, and interpret the results
  3. Recent developments: Covers logging tools and presentations, as well as older logs not discussed in the first edition

The authors also cover cased-hole logs: cement and casing inspection logs, reservoir monitor logs, and production logs. By the end of the book, you should be at least conversant with nearly every phase of well logging.
